Xiaohongshu differs fundamentally from most advertising platforms: it is a search community first and a content community second.
Users come with questions rather than simply browsing— "How much is the average decoration quote?", "Which brand of probiotics is good", "How to choose sun protection clothing". This means two things:
- Your content must be searchable, and keyword layout is more important than creativity;
- The user's decision-making occurs in comments section, rather than the note itself.
Understanding these two points, you can understand why many brand notes have good data but poor leads - the content works, but the conversion path does not.
Step one: nail down the account positioning first
The most common mistake in agent operations is "sending everything". The first thing we did after taking over the account was to confirm three things:
- Explain who you are in one sentence: It is not a "high-end home decoration brand", but "Shenzhen old house renovation, quotation by square meter, own construction team".
- One note only solves one problem: Break down big topics into small questions that users will actually ask.
- Define the voice: Is it the official tone of the brand, or the real experience of designers, store managers, and users. The more specific the persona is, the more willing readers are to ask questions.
For the project of home-renovation brand “Qingqingzhuang”, the first thing we did was to change the content from "brand promotion" to "quotation dismantling". The effect is directly reflected in the comment area:90% of comments concern quotations or purchase intent——It’s not a like and thank you, it’s an inquiry.
Step 2: Build a content matrix instead of gambling on viral posts
A single hit cannot be copied, but a matrix can. Our content ratio is roughly:
| Type | Proportion | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Question-answering | 40% | Undertake search traffic, long-term stability |
| Use-case stories | 25% | Build perception, content seeding main force |
| Comparisons and reviews | 20% | Influence decisions and transform the previous step |
| Brand-persona content | 15% | Build trust and increase customer orders |
The problem-solving type accounts for the highest proportion because it corresponds to Search requirements——Users can search for it and it can last for more than a year; while the life cycle of popular notes is usually only a few days.
You need to be mentally prepared for the magnitude. The Qingqingzhuang project generated 200+ customer leads and 1,000+ direct messages per month through a steady content supply—not one or two viral posts.
Step 3: Treat the comments as a conversion touchpoint
This step is a watershed. Three things to do in the comment area:
- Leave a hook for questioning. Don't finish all the answers in your notes, leave a space for "the specific quotation depends on the actual situation."
- Receive private messages using a unified vocabulary, but don't copy and paste - users can see it. Give a process-based response framework and let people fill in the details.
- Precipitate high-frequency issues into new notes. The most frequently asked question in the comment area is this topic for the next article.
In the project of the functional food brand Lifespace, we relied on this approach to grow the enterprise account’s followers by 355%, increase on-platform sales by 1,338%, reach No. 1 in its Xiaohongshu category, and generate more than 180 million impressions. If the sales on the site can increase, it shows that the content has really reached the decision-making stage.
Step 4: Review data by node, not by feeling
When reviewing, look at four numbers: search exposure, note interaction rate, private message volume, and private message to transaction rate. These four numbers respectively correspond to the four links of content, topic selection, acceptance, and conversion. Problems can be located immediately.
Nodal rhythm is also critical. For fintech client Tencent Wealth Management, we delivered a complete campaign around a key marketing moment. What we do is "double-line exposure of nodes" - paving the way for content before the node, scaling distribution during the key period, and finally winning 30 million+ exposures, viral-post rate 58.6%. Node marketing and daily content seeding are two sets of rhythms and cannot be mixed.
A checklist to follow
- [ ] Account positioning in one sentence + clear personality
- [ ] List 30 questions that users actually search for
- [ ] Arrange the contents of the week according to the ratio of 4:2.5:2:1.5
- [ ] Design a "questionable" hook for each note
- [ ] Unified private message communication framework
- [ ] Weekly review of search exposure/interaction rate/volume of private messages/transaction rate
One final reminder
The promise most often made in Xiaohongshu managed operations is “we’ll create viral posts for you.” But hits are the result, not the method. What is truly repeatable is this chain: topics come from search demand, content solves specific problems, and comments drive conversion.
If the budget is limited, it is recommended to create question-answer-type content first - it will be slower to take effect, but it will continue to bring business to the account.
