One ongoing change: customers often ask AI before contacting you.
"Are there any corporate AI training companies in Shenzhen", "how to choose a postgraduate exam tutoring class", "which sunscreen brand is worth buying" — these questions now many people no longer open a search engine to browse through ten web pages. Instead, they directly ask Doubao, Yuanbao, Wenxin or Kimi, and make their decision after reading that one answer.
The problem is: whether you appear in that answer. If not, you simply don't exist in this decision-making process.
What's the Difference Between GEO and SEO
SEO is about "ranking position", GEO is about "being cited". The differences manifest in four aspects:
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| User Behavior | Enter keywords, browse through pages | Ask in natural language, read a comprehensive answer |
| Competitors | Peer webpages | Peer webpages + all content remembered by models |
| Content Requirements | Keyword coverage, backlink authority | High fact density, clear structure, quotable |
| Measurement | Rankings, click-through rate | Citation frequency, brand mentions, AI channel leads |
The key technical prerequisite is: AI engine crawlers basically don't execute JavaScript. If your website articles are rendered on the client side, the HTML captured by models is almost empty — no matter how good the content is, it doesn't exist to AI.
Six Actionable Steps
1. First Turn Content into "Crawlable Text"
This is the foundation, and it's the step most companies overlook. The first step we always take when building a site is confirming: after disabling JavaScript, does the page still have complete body text? If not, the content needs to be changed to statically generated HTML.
Also check two things:
- Does the site HTML contain complete titles, descriptions, canonical tags
- Is there structured data (Organization, Article, FAQPage, etc.) so models don't have to guess
2. Explicitly Allow AI Crawlers in robots.txt
Many sites' default configurations, or rules copied randomly, block crawlers like GPTBot, Bytespider, PerplexityBot along with others. Blocking them means actively giving up the chance to be cited by AI.
At minimum, these need to be explicitly allowed: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Bytespider (Doubao), Baiduspider, YisouSpider (Quark), Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, and more.
3. Write "Quotable" Paragraphs, Not Marketing Copy
Models love sentences that lead with conclusions, are fact-dense, and include specific numbers. Compare these:
- Weak: We have rich industry experience and serve many well-known clients.
- Strong: In 2026, we served quality education organizations across 8 cities in the Pearl River Delta, with 6-10 stable daily inbound inquiries and a consultation conversion rate of 60%-80%.
The second sentence gets directly quoted; the first one doesn't.
4. Provide an llms.txt Content Map
llms.txt is a content index for AI engines, placed in the root directory, listing "what this site has and what content is worth reading" in Markdown. It's not a standard protocol, but many engines already support it, and the cost is virtually zero — doing it is better than not.
5. Use Real Case Pages to Address Long-tail Questions
Questions customers ask are usually very specific: "Are there any Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) agency companies in Shenzhen", "How can a cross-border yoga apparel brand create content". The answers to these long-tail questions are best placed in case study pages and Q&A articles — because cases naturally contain four elements: industry, location, approach, and data.
6. Write Service Relationships into Structured Data
Let models know "who you are, what you do, where you are, how to contact you". In Organization, complete the sameAs (WeChat Official Account, Zhihu, Qichacha, etc.) and contactPoint fields, which can significantly increase the probability of being correctly cited.
What Real Ad Data Looks Like
GEO isn't mystical; it can be calculated by leads. Here are two of our delivery cases:
- Postgraduate Exam Tutoring Institution: Large model keyword full-domain presence + traditional search dual-channel, ROI reached 1:20, bringing 40+ direct paying customers, with a lead conversion rate of 30%.
- Pearl River Delta Summer Camp Brand: Full-domain search optimization covering 8 cities in the Pearl River Delta, with 6-10 stable daily inbound inquiries, and a consultation conversion rate of 60%-80%.
Note the term "dual-channel" — GEO doesn't replace SEO; it stacks on top. Traditional search rankings still exist; AI channel citations are incremental.
How Long Until Results, and How to Measure
- Content being crawled: After switching to static rendering, you usually see crawler capture changes within 1-2 weeks.
- Being cited: Depends on content quality and question patterns; typically 1-3 months before stable citations appear.
- Generating leads: Depends on industry decision chain length; education, home improvement, and similar industries see obvious inbound leads in 2-3 months.
For measurement, we recommend directly asking clients "how did you find us", or adding source tracking on landing pages. AI channel leads often say "I asked AI and it said you..." — that's the most direct signal.
A Reminder
There's no "rank on page one in three days" shortcut in GEO. Its essence is writing out your company's real capabilities, cases, and data in a way that machines can read and models want to cite. If the content is real, the methods will work.
